If you're going to list items on eBay, the platform will most likely ask you for a barcode for eBay: what appears in the listing form as the GTIN (your product's EAN or UPC number). Without it, many categories won't let you complete the listing, or they leave it on a poor catalog entry that ranks worse. In this guide we explain exactly what eBay requires, how to add the code to your listing and how to get your EAN codes for eBay in minutes.
Which barcode does eBay ask for?
eBay doesn't invent its own format: it uses the international GTIN standard (Global Trade Item Number), the system that encompasses the classic EAN and UPC codes. In practice, when you create a listing you'll see a field called "GTIN" or "Barcode", and there you must enter one of these two:
- EAN-13: the European 13-digit code. It's the usual one on eBay in Spain and the rest of Europe.
- UPC-A: the 12-digit code used in the US and Canada. It's the usual one on eBay.com.
Both are types of GTIN, so an EAN-13 is equivalent to a GTIN-13. If you have doubts about these concepts, we cover them in depth in what an EAN barcode is.
| Feature | EAN-13 | UPC-A |
|---|---|---|
| Number of digits | 13 | 12 |
| Main market | Europe and the rest of the world | US and Canada |
| Where to use it on eBay | eBay Spain and European eBay sites | eBay.com |
| Is it a GTIN | Yes (GTIN-13) | Yes (GTIN-12) |
To sell in Spain and Europe, the EAN-13 is the recommended choice. The country prefix (for example, those starting with 84x correspond to companies registered in Spain) sits inside the EAN-13 itself: there's no separate "EAN-84" format. It's the GS1 organization that manages and assigns those prefixes worldwide.
Do you need a barcode to sell on eBay?
In most categories of new branded products, yes: eBay marks the GTIN as mandatory to improve the product listing and group offers in its catalog. Without the barcode you'll run into one of these scenarios:
- You can't publish the listing until you provide a valid GTIN or the "Does not apply" option.
- The listing goes live, but without enrichment and with less visibility in eBay's internal searches.
There are legitimate exceptions (we cover them below), but if you sell identifiable products, having a unique EAN saves you friction and ranks you better.

How to add the EAN/GTIN code to your eBay listing
Once you have the code, adding it to the listing is quick. The general flow is this:
- Go to Sell and start a new listing or edit an existing one.
- Specify the product and its category. eBay will then show the GTIN field (it may also appear as "EAN", "UPC" or "Barcode").
- Enter your EAN-13 (or the UPC-A if you sell on eBay.com) exactly as we deliver it, without spaces or dashes.
- If the code is new to eBay's catalog, fill in the rest of the listing fields (title, brand, photos) and publish.
When eBay recognizes the GTIN, it usually autocompletes part of the listing; if your product isn't in its catalog yet, you'll be the one creating that entry tied to your EAN. That's also how the delivery of your codes works with us: EAN number + barcode image, all ready to paste.
What if eBay requires a mandatory GTIN but my product doesn't have one?
Some categories offer the "Does not apply" / "Generic brand" option for products without a code. It's best to reserve it for genuine cases where the product can't have a GTIN (custom items, bundles, used goods without a reference). Choosing "Does not apply" out of convenience when you could use an EAN penalizes you: you lose the enriched listing and drop to lower positions. If your product is new and sold on a recurring basis, the right thing is to assign it its own EAN.
Products without a GTIN: own brands and handmade goods
If you make your own brand, or sell handmade or custom products, your items don't "come" with a factory code, but they can and should carry one to be sold on eBay as new products. The solution is to assign a unique EAN-13 to each reference. That's exactly what we do at EAN CODA: we deliver legitimate codes ready to use, without you having to register your company with GS1 or pay annual fees. Benefits of using an EAN in your eBay listings
Beyond meeting the requirement, the barcode gives you concrete benefits as a seller:
- Better ranking: your listing is tied to the correct catalog entry and gains visibility in eBay's searches.
- Enriched listing: eBay can show product data, images and specifications automatically.
- Fewer inventory errors: as a globally unique identifier, it avoids stock, dispatch or return mix-ups.
- Multichannel selling: the same EAN works for Amazon, Google Shopping and other marketplaces, without generating different codes for each one.

How to get your barcode for eBay
You have two routes. The first is to register directly with GS1, the organization that manages the prefixes: it's the official path, but it involves paperwork and, usually, registration and annual maintenance fees. The second is to buy already-assigned EAN codes from a reseller like EAN CODA: a faster and cheaper alternative, ideal if you need just a few codes without the hassle. To avoid misunderstandings: we are not GS1, we are a provider that assigns you legitimate GS1 codes.
With us the process is straightforward:
- Choose how many codes you need (one for each distinct product or variant) in the purchase widget.
- Pay securely. We don't need any details about your product.
- You receive the codes by email in minutes, ready to paste into your eBay listing.
If you're hesitating between the 13-digit format and the shorter one, we help you decide in differences between EAN-13 and EAN-8. For eBay, in practice, what you need is the EAN-13.
In what format do you receive the codes?
We deliver each code as an image file ready to use and upload to eBay, in the industry-standard formats:
- JPEG: the most universal, lightweight and compatible with any device.
- EPS: vector and high resolution, ideal for professional design and printing.
- TIFF: useful when you need a transparent background or maximum quality.
Along with the graphic file you receive the EAN number, which is exactly what you have to type into the listing's GTIN field.
Payment methods
You can pay by card or with the methods available at the time of purchase. The payment is one-time: you pay once for each code and it's yours forever, with no annual fees. We only need your billing details; we don't ask for information about the product you're going to sell.
Frequently asked questions
Does eBay require a barcode?
In most categories of new branded products, yes: the GTIN field is mandatory. Some categories let you select "Does not apply" or "Generic brand", but it's best to reserve that for products that genuinely can't have a code. If your item is identifiable, using an EAN gives you better visibility.
Does the same EAN work for eBay and Amazon?
Yes. The EAN-13 is a globally unique identifier, so the same code works for eBay, Amazon, Google Shopping and other marketplaces. You don't need a different code per platform. You'll find the details in our guide on barcodes for Amazon.
How much does an EAN code cost?
At EAN CODA, from €3 per code, in a one-time payment and with no annual fees. The more codes you buy, the better the price per unit. You can see the exact cost by quantity in the purchase widget.
How long until I receive the codes?
By email, within minutes of completing the payment. There's no days-long wait: as soon as we confirm the purchase, you receive your codes ready to use on eBay.
Are the codes unique and legal?
Yes. We assign you legitimate GS1 codes, unique worldwide, so no other product shares your EAN. We work as a reseller: we are not GS1 directly, but the codes you receive are valid for selling on eBay and the rest of the marketplaces. You can check more questions in the frequently asked questions about EAN codes on our website.
