How is the check digit calculated?
The 13th (check) digit is derived from the first 12: they are multiplied alternately by 1 and 3 (left to right), summed, and the check digit is whatever is needed to reach the next multiple of ten. This lets any scanner detect typing errors.
What is an EAN-13 code?
